What is it?
The FL5 Civic Type R is the sixth generation of Honda's flagship hot hatch and the second to ride on the 11th-generation Civic platform. It uses a revised version of the K20C1 2.0L VTEC turbocharged four, producing 235 kW and 420 Nm. Drive goes to the front wheels only through a six-speed manual with rev-matching, a helical limited-slip differential, and Honda's dual-axis front strut design. Single grade in Australia at $74,700 drive-away with five paint colours. Allocation is tight, Honda Australia delivering roughly 80 cars a month.
The lineup runs from Type R 6MT at $74,700 drive-away, through to Premium paint (Boost Blue Pearl, Rallye Red, others) at $575 drive-away. Warranty cover sits at 5 years, unlimited km.
Interior and Technology
235 kW from a 2.0L four still makes the FL5 the most powerful FWD hot hatch on sale. Six-speed manual only, with rev-matching that can be switched off. Helical LSD plus Honda's dual-axis front strut design keeps torque steer in check. Drive-away single-grade pricing across all Australian states removes the haggle.
Honda Australia allocation is tight, dealer wait lists routinely sit at 9 to 12 months. FWD only, no AWD option to match Golf R, GR Corolla or Subaru WRX. Aero kit polarises, the wing is too much for some daily-driver buyers.

Reasons to wait
- Honda Australia allocation is tight, dealer wait lists routinely sit at 9 to 12 months. FWD only, no AWD option to match Golf R, GR Corolla or Subaru WRX. Aero kit polarises, the wing is too much for some daily-driver buyers.
- You want AWD all-weather grip (VW Golf R, Toyota GR Corolla, Subaru WRX), or you cannot wait the 9 to 12 months that Honda Australia dealer order banks are quoting on the Type R.
- Confirm your dealer order position. AWD rivals like the Golf R and GR Corolla are now within $5,000 and offer all-weather grip the Type R cannot match. If you specifically want a manual front-driver and can wait for delivery, the Type R is the pick.
- Top trim climbs to $75,275 drive-away.
