What is it?

The Sonata is Hyundai's mid-size sedan, currently in the eighth (DN8) generation with a 2023 facelift. Globally available as a 2.5 Smartstream petrol four, a 2.5 twin-scroll turbo in the N Line at 213 kW and 422 Nm, or a 2.0 Smartstream Hybrid at 142 kW combined. None are imported by Hyundai Australia. This page is a reference entry only, kept in the directory in case of a future local launch.

The lineup runs from N Line 2.5T (global, not on AU sale) at null plus on-roads, through to 2.5 Petrol (global, not on AU sale) at null plus on-roads. Warranty cover sits at 5 years, unlimited km.

Interior and Technology

N Line 213 kW twin-scroll 2.5T is one of the strongest mid-size sedan outputs available globally. Hybrid achieves 4.2 to 4.8 L/100 km on the combined cycle. Curved twin 12.3-inch display is a flagship layout, and the column shifter clears the console for usable storage. Boot space of 480 to 510 L beats most rivals.

Not sold in Australia, so no Hyundai Australia drive-away pricing exists. Mid-size sedan segment has shrunk locally with the Camry hybrid dominant. No local ANCAP rating because no Australian test car has been submitted. Parts and warranty would need full local re-engineering before any return.

  • You actually need to buy a mid-size sedan in Australia today. The Sonata is not on local sale. Cross-shop the Toyota Camry hybrid, Honda Accord e:HEV, BYD Seal EV, and the run-out Mazda 6.
  • There is nothing to buy in Australia. Treat this page as reference only. CarTell.tv will revisit if Hyundai Australia confirms a return, which is widely tipped to be electrified.

The CarTell take

We have not driven this yet. On paper, here is how it stacks up.

Best suited to
Reference only. Fleet buyers wanting a hybrid sedan with low running costs, sedan loyalists chasing the N Line 213 kW 2.5T, ride-share operators wanting a 510 L boot with low fuel use, and Camry-hybrid families looking for an alternative if Hyundai Australia confirmed a local launch.

Common questions
Is the Hyundai Sonata sold in Australia?

No. The DN8 sedan was withdrawn from the local lineup and the facelifted N Line and Hybrid have not been launched in Australia. This page is reference only.

Why was the Sonata withdrawn in Australia?

Mid-size sedan demand has collapsed locally against medium SUVs, and Hyundai Australia chose not to import the DN8 facelift. The Toyota Camry hybrid dominates the remaining segment.

What is the Sonata N Line?

Globally the N Line uses a twin-scroll turbo 2.5L making 213 kW and 422 Nm through an 8-speed wet dual-clutch gearbox. Not sold in Australia.

Will the Sonata return to Australia?

Not confirmed. CarTell.tv will revisit this page if Hyundai Australia announces a local launch for the next generation, which is widely tipped to be electrified.
