What is it?

The S5 EV is MG's replacement for the long-running ZS EV, and the first ground-up electric SUV from the brand to use a dedicated rear motor layout in Australia. Two LFP batteries (49 kWh or 64 kWh) and three grades from $40,990 to $47,990 plus on-roads. The 10 year vehicle warranty is the longest in the segment.

The lineup runs from Excite Standard Range at $40,990 plus on-roads, through to Essence Long Range at $47,990 plus on-roads. Warranty cover sits at 10 years, 250,000 km (transferable).

Interior and Technology

10 year or 250,000 km vehicle warranty is the longest in the segment by years. Long Range delivers 480 km WLTP and 139 kW DC peak for under $48,000. LFP battery for better thermal stability and longer cycle life. Physical climate buttons retained.

500 kg braked tow rating is the lowest in the comparison set. The Long Range stays on 400V architecture, so it cannot match 800V Korean rivals on DC speed. Service network is smaller than Hyundai or Kia for regional buyers.

Should you buy the S5 EV?

Reasons to buy

  • 10 year or 250,000 km vehicle warranty is the longest in the segment by years. Long Range delivers 480 km WLTP and 139 kW DC peak for under $48,000. LFP battery for better thermal stability and longer cycle life. Physical climate buttons retained.
  • Warranty: 10 years, 250,000 km (7 years, 160,000 km battery).
  • 5-star ANCAP (2024), full driver-assist suite.
  • 453 L (1,441 L folded) boot, segment-competitive cargo space.
  • Braked towing rated at 500 kg.

Reasons to wait

  • 500 kg braked tow rating is the lowest in the comparison set. The Long Range stays on 400V architecture, so it cannot match 800V Korean rivals on DC speed. Service network is smaller than Hyundai or Kia for regional buyers.
  • You tow more than 500 kg (the S5 EV is the smallest tower in the class), you want 800V fast charging (Kia EV3), or you need a wider service network in regional areas (Hyundai or Kia).
  • The Long Range Excite at $44,990 is the rational pick for most buyers. Essence adds nice-to-haves rather than essentials. If you can stretch, a Kia EV3 trades the warranty advantage for faster charging.
  • Top trim climbs to $47,990 plus on-roads.
