Volkswagen ID.4

The ID.4 is Volkswagen's mid-size electric SUV, built on the MEB platform alongside the Cupra Born and Skoda Enyaq. Australia got the car in late 2024 with the post-facelift body and the bigger 82 kWh battery, skipping the early MEB software issues. Two variants: a 210 kW RWD Pro and a 250 kW AWD dual-motor GTX, both with the option of the ID.5 coupe body at a small premium.

The lineup runs from ID.4 Pro at $59,990 plus on-roads, through to ID.5 GTX coupe at $77,990 plus on-roads. Warranty cover sits at 5 years, unlimited km.

Interior and Technology

543 L boot is the biggest in the mid-size EV SUV segment. 544 km WLTP on the Pro with no GTX trade-off needed for range. Updated MEB software fixes the early launch infotainment issues, and VW dealer network is one of the largest in Australia.

No frunk, no V2L on either variant. 5-year warranty trails Korean and Chinese EV rivals at 7 years. GTX at $72,990 plus on-roads competes hard with Tesla Model Y AWD.

Should you buy the ID.4?

Reasons to buy

  • 543 L boot is the biggest in the mid-size EV SUV segment. 544 km WLTP on the Pro with no GTX trade-off needed for range. Updated MEB software fixes the early launch infotainment issues, and VW dealer network is one of the largest in Australia.
  • Warranty: 5 years, unlimited km (8-year battery).
  • 5-star ANCAP (2021), full driver-assist suite.
  • 543 L boot, segment-competitive cargo space.
  • Braked towing rated at 1,200 kg.

Reasons to wait

  • No frunk, no V2L on either variant. 5-year warranty trails Korean and Chinese EV rivals at 7 years. GTX at $72,990 plus on-roads competes hard with Tesla Model Y AWD.
  • You want a frunk, V2L bidirectional charging, a longer battery warranty (Korean rivals at 7 years), or the Tesla Supercharger network with Model Y.
  • Late entry to Australia means launch pricing already faces discounting. The ID.5 coupe body trades a small amount of headroom for an extra 6 km of WLTP range. Confirm DC fast-charging speeds at your local network, the 175 kW peak is consistent but not class-leading.
  • Top trim climbs to $77,990 plus on-roads.
