This is for the family shopping the busy mid-size SUV class on a budget. The Equinox is Holden's replacement for the long serving Captiva, built to take on the Mazda CX-5, Hyundai Tucson and Toyota RAV4. It leans on turbo petrol engines and sharp drive away pricing to get a look in.
Simone's test finds a roomy cabin, a decent boot and a punchy turbo that pulls well once it is rolling. The interior plastics tell you where the money was saved, but the basics work and the back seat suits a growing family. On Australian roads the ride is settled enough for the school run and the odd country trip.
If you want space and turbo go for less than the class favourites, the Equinox is worth a test drive. Buyers who value resale and a polished cabin may stretch to a CX-5. For value and pace, Holden put up a fair fight here.
