The Hyundai IONIQ arrived as a direct alternative to the Toyota Prius: same category, same mission, but without the polarising styling that puts half the Prius's potential customers off. The Hybrid version is the more affordable of the IONIQ's three powertrains and the one most buyers will choose.
Jenny reviews it on Australian roads and finds the IONIQ Hybrid does its job without drama. The transition between petrol and electric is seamless in normal traffic, fuel consumption is excellent for a car of this size, and the cabin is clean and well-organised. Rear passenger space is tight for a five-door, and the boot is smaller than it looks from outside.
The IONIQ Hybrid is for drivers who want the fuel economy benefits of a hybrid without paying the EV premium or navigating charging infrastructure. It drives like a conventional car, costs less to run than one, and looks like something you would actually choose rather than settle for.
