The Land Rover Discovery is one of those vehicle names that carries genuine weight. The previous generation was sold for over 14 years, which says something about both its durability and Land Rover's confidence in the formula. The new model is a full departure: lighter, more car-like, and more willing to be measured against the premium family SUV segment.

Simone reviews the TD6 HSE, the diesel six-cylinder in the upper-mid trim level. Seven seats, a sophisticated air suspension system, and terrain management that makes the Discogenuinely capable off the beaten track. On regular Australian roads it feels like a premium large SUV, which is the point: the off-road ability is a safety net rather than a daily requirement for most buyers.

The DiscoTD6 HSE is for families who need a large, practical, seven-seat vehicle and want capability that a BMW X7 does not offer. Land Rover has made it easier to live with daily than any previous Discovery. Those after pure on-road dynamics should look at the Range Rover Sport instead.
