The Santa Fe sits at the top of Hyundai's SUV range and has always been the practical choice over the flashy one. The 2019 model is a full redesign with a new platform and a cabin that moves decisively away from the dull-but-functional look of the outgoing car.

Jenny reviews the Highlander, the top-spec variant, and finds the interior is well-finished by mainstream standards. Seven seats, a large boot even with the third row in use, and enough technology to feel current without being overwhelming. The 2.2-litre diesel pushes this people-mover around without fuss, and fuel consumption is reasonable for the size.

The Santa Fe Highlander is the car you buy when you have kids, dogs, or both, and want everything to work without thinking about it too hard. It is not the most exciting car in the segment. Excitement is not what the school run demands.
