The Isuzu MU-X occupies an interesting corner of the Australian SUV market. It shares its underpinnings with the D-MAX ute, which means genuine off-road credentials and a 3.0-litre diesel that has earned a solid reliability reputation. For the family that needs seven seats, a real tow rating, and the ability to get up a corrugated track to a holiday campsite, it is a coherent package.

Simone tested the LS-T top trim and found the MU-X more refined than its ladder-frame origins suggest. The interior is a step up from previous iterations, with more considered materials and an improved infotainment layout. The third row suits children better than adults, which is honest for the class. On the road, the diesel's torque is present and useful, and the ride manages the school run without punishing passengers.

The MU-X makes the most sense for the buyer who genuinely uses their vehicle beyond the suburbs on a regular basis. Seven seats, a real tow capacity, and 4WD capability without the lifestyle SUV price premium is a useful combination in regional Australia. Urban-only buyers would be better served by a front-wheel-drive wagon.
