The Jaguar I-PACE arrived as a statement that the electric transition could still be desirable. It is an all-electric five-door SUV built on a dedicated platform, which means none of the compromises that come from converting an existing petrol car to battery power. The SE AWD tested here sits at the more accessible end of the I-PACE range, though accessible is relative at this price.
Simone found the I-PACE enjoyable to drive: composed, quick to respond, and carrying its weight well through corners. The range covers the majority of Australian daily and weekly driving patterns. Charging on AC overnight is the practical reality for most owners. The interior is as close as Jaguar has come to matching the Tesla cabin brief while feeling thoroughly British about it.
The I-PACE is for buyers who want the EV future and cannot abide the minimalist aesthetic of the alternative. It is not cheap to run relative to its sticker price, but it is genuinely good to drive. For the luxury SUV buyer with a Level 2 charger at home, it was a strong option in 2019 and remains interesting as a used proposition today.
