The Mazda CX-9 has always punched above its price in terms of how it looks and how it is put together. The 2019 update brings more equipment across the range without fundamentally changing what made it popular: a seven-seat SUV that does not feel like a punishment to drive.

Jenny reviews it as someone who would actually park this in the school drop-off zone. The second row has decent legroom, the third row is accessible for average-sized adults on short trips, and the boot with all three rows in use is workable. The 2.5-litre turbo petrol does its job quietly and without fuss.

The CX-9 sits in a field alongside the Kia Sorento, Hyundai Santa Fe, and Toyota Kluger. Where it pulls ahead is on build quality and cabin design. If you prioritise those things and can live without a diesel option, this deserves serious consideration.
