This is the car that launches Polestar as its own name rather than a Volvo trim. The 1 is a low, wide grand tourer with a carbon fibre body and a plug-in hybrid drivetrain, built in small numbers to make a point. It is aimed at buyers who want something rare that still wears Swedish calm.

Jenny's preview from Geneva picks up the concept car looks that made the production cut, the clean cabin and the promise of serious electric only range for a hybrid of its day. For an Australian buyer it signals where Polestar is heading, even if this halo coupe will be a rare sight on the Monash. The detail work is the real story.

The 1 is a statement more than a volume seller, so most of us will admire it and wait for the cheaper Polestars that follow. If you want an early piece of the brand and you have the garage for it, this is the collector's pick. The rest of us watch this space.
