The Forester has never chased trends. Where other small SUVs got lower, sleeker, and more coupe-shaped with each generation, Subaru kept the roofline high and the visibility excellent. The 2019 version is no different in spirit, though the exterior does make an effort to look more contemporary.
Simone tests the 2.5i Premium, which sits in the middle of the range. The naturally aspirated engine is smooth and adequate rather than exciting, which sums up the Forester fairly well. The strengths show up in practicality: the boot is enormous, the rear seats fold flat, and driver visibility at all angles makes parking feel like a non-issue.
The Forester is for people who have owned one before and know what they are buying. It is a sensible, durable, practical family car with genuine all-weather competence. Those after a car that looks good in the driveway will look elsewhere, and Subaru knows that.
