The 2019 Volvo XC40 is a genuinely new vehicle for a brand that had not competed in the subcompact SUV segment before. As Volvo's smallest SUV, it targets buyers who want the brand's characteristic approach to safety and Scandinavian design in a more compact and accessible package.

Jenny reviews the XC40 T5 Momentum AWD in the Launch Edition configuration, a variant that sold out before the review was even finished. The T5 designation indicates the top petrol engine choice, paired with AWD in the Momentum trim. Since the review was filmed, Volvo announced additional variants including T4 models in Inscription and Momentum trims, with 2WD options that bring the entry price down.

The XC40 arrives in a segment already occupied by offerings from Audi, BMW and Mercedes-Benz. Volvo's safety record and distinctive design language give the XC40 a strong platform from which to compete, and the early sell-out of the Launch Edition suggests that buyers were waiting for exactly this kind of Volvo.
