The Mitsubishi Outlander sits in the sweet spot for families who want flexibility without the premium badge price. It offers three powertrains and can be had in FWD or AWD, which means there is something for most buyers. The Exceed tested here is the range-topper with diesel and AWD, the one that makes sense if you have a caravan or a camping habit.
Amelia spent a week in the Outlander Exceed and found the interior comfortable rather than memorable. The seven seats are there when you need them, though the third row is better suited to children than adults. Storage is thoughtful, the diesel pulls without fuss on the highway, and the AWD system earns its money on a gravel driveway rather than a mining track.
The Outlander Exceed will not light up any enthusiast forums, but it was never meant to. For a family of five with occasional weekend escapes, it covers the brief without drama. Buy the diesel if you drive further than 20,000 km a year. If most of your driving is urban, the PHEV variant deserves a separate look.
