The IONIQ 5 arrived in Australia with a lot of expectation behind it. Hyundai's first proper attempt at a dedicated EV platform, and the car that was going to make the general buyer think twice about petrol. In 2022, that was still a claim worth testing in person.

Charli takes the IONIQ 5 through the kinds of driving that matter to the actual buyer: commuting, weekend errands, and the longer run where you start doing battery maths in your head. The 800-volt architecture and rapid charging rate get a real workout. The flat floor and retro interior get their time too.

The IONIQ 5 is the car that moved a lot of sceptics off the fence. If you have been sitting on it about going electric, this is probably the one that makes the argument land.
