The bZ4X is the first model in Toyota's bZ (Beyond Zero) electric sub-brand and arrives in Australia about three years after every other major manufacturer launched their first EV. It is built on a dedicated platform shared with the Subaru Solterra and aimed squarely at the family-buyer who values Toyota's reliability above outright EV credentials.

What you are buying

A 71.4 kWh battery, a 150 kW front-mounted motor, and around 470 km of WLTP range in the FWD variant. AWD trims add a second motor and lose some range. Charging tops out at around 150 kW DC, which is reasonable in 2024 but not class-leading.

Cartell Assessment

The bZ4X is a fine first attempt that arrives at a time when fine first attempts are not enough. Hyundai, Kia, BYD and Tesla have all moved further than Toyota in the EV space, and the bZ4X does not quite catch up. What it does offer is the Toyota service network and the Toyota long-term reputation, and for some buyers that is the only argument that matters.

AU Outlook

bZ4X pricing in Australia sits in the mid-$60k to high-$70k drive-away range. Cross-shop is the Tesla Model Y, the Hyundai IONIQ 5, and the Kia EV5. Verify the latest figures with the Toyota Australia configurator.
