The IONIQ 9 is Hyundai's first crack at the seven-seat luxury electric SUV. It is bigger than the IONIQ 5, calmer than the Kia EV9, and aimed squarely at the family that wants the space of a Palisade with the running cost of a household battery.

What you are buying

A 110 kWh battery in the Long Range cars, with WLTP range up to 620 km on the rear-drive trim and around 580 km on the Calligraphy AWD. 800-volt architecture means a 10 to 80 per cent DC charge in around 24 minutes on a fast enough charger. Three rows of seats and a calm cabin that genuinely feels like a step up from the EV9.

Cartell Assessment

Hyundai has not tried to make the IONIQ 9 sporty, and the car is better for it. It is a quiet, comfortable family EV with the highway manners of a Genesis and the practicality of a Palisade. The Calligraphy is the trim to spec if you want the full luxury experience.

AU Outlook
