Mahindra arrives in Australia properly with the XUV 3XO — a compact SUV aimed squarely at first-time buyers and small families looking at the MG ZS, the Suzuki Vitara and the Mazda CX-3. On paper, it has more standard kit than any of them.

The 1.2-litre turbo three-cylinder is willing rather than punchy, and the auto box would prefer you didn't ask too much of it on hills. But around town, where this car will spend its life, the XUV 3XO does exactly what it sets out to do.

The story here is value: panoramic sunroof, Level 2 ADAS, a real touchscreen and a 7-year warranty, all undercutting the established players. If Mahindra get the Australian launch pricing right, this is going to be a quietly important car.
