Chery has locked in local pricing for the C5 Hybrid, and it undercuts most of the small hybrid SUVs it is chasing. The range opens at $31,990 drive-away for the Urban and $34,990 drive-away for the Ultimate, a step of about $2,000 over the petrol C5.

The hybrid numbers

A 1.5L turbo four (105kW/215Nm) pairs with a 150kW/310Nm electric motor for 165kW combined, sent to the front wheels through a dedicated hybrid transmission. Chery claims 4.9L/100km on the combined cycle and 111g/km of CO2. Standard kit includes dual 12.3-inch screens, synthetic leather and heated front seats.

Cartell Assessment

The C5 Hybrid lands under the Hyundai Kona Hybrid and the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid, which both start higher, and well under the Nissan Qashqai e-Power. On price alone it walks straight into the conversation. The cabin and the drive will decide whether it stays there.

AU Outlook

Cars arrive in dealers this month. If Chery holds the drive-away pricing through the quarter, expect the C5 Hybrid to pressure the established players on value.
