Ford Australia has slashed pricing on the 2026 Ranger PHEV by up to $10,000 and bolted a $4,000 fuel card onto the front of every deal. The entry XLT variant is now $62,000 driveaway. The Sport sits at $66,000 driveaway, Wildtrak at $70,000, and the top Stormtrak at $73,000. The offer runs to 30 June 2026.

When the Ranger PHEV launched late last year it opened at $71,990 plus on-roads. Stick the on-road costs on top and most buyers were looking at $77,000 to get the cheapest one home. That number was always going to age badly the moment the BYD Shark 6 landed at $57,900 driveaway with similar power, similar towing and a longer EV-only range.

The Shark 6 set the price

The Shark 6 has been selling more than 2,000 units a month since launch. It produces 321kW and 650Nm from a 1.5-litre turbo four and twin motors, can tow 2,500kg braked and drives roughly 100km on the battery alone. The Ranger PHEV pushes 207kW and 697Nm from a 2.3-litre EcoBoost four and a 75kW motor, tows 3,500kg, and claims 49km of EV range. Different tools, similar territory, $14,000 different at the start line.

GWM has not stood still either. The Cannon Alpha PHEV combines 300kW and 750Nm with a 3,500kg braked tow rating and DC fast charging, undercutting the Ranger PHEV by several thousand. Three of the four best-selling plug-in utes in Australia are now Chinese.

What you are actually paying for

The XLT comes better-equipped than before. 17-inch alloys, a 12.4-inch digital cluster, 12-inch infotainment with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, dual-zone climate with rear vents, and Ford's Intelligent Cruise with Stop and Go are standard.

The PHEV powertrain still uses an 11.8kWh battery and Ford claims 2.9 L/100km on the combined cycle. That number is laughable in the real world if you never plug it in. Plug it in nightly and it is plausible for buyers doing less than 50km a day.

Cartell Assessment

The $4,000 fuel card on a plug-in hybrid is a confession. Ford knows the value of the Ranger PHEV against the Shark 6 is not in fuel cost over a year, it is in the badge and the dealer network. Sticking $4,000 of petrol in your tank before you drive away is the company saying yes we cost more, here is some of that money back. It is the right move. The Ranger has 30 years of tradie credibility and a service van in every town. The Shark 6 has price, technology and a five-star ANCAP rating from May 2026. Buyers will pick on that, not on plug-in hybrid efficiency claims.

AU Outlook

Ford's offer runs to 30 June 2026. Expect a follow-up campaign from BYD before EOFY closes. The third name to watch is the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV, which has been undercut by Ford on the XLT but still wins on standard features at its level. If you are in the market, this is the best PHEV ute pricing Australia has ever had. Buy now or wait three months and watch the cycle repeat.
