Geely is having the kind of month most new brands only dream about. September VFACTS figures show the Chinese maker up about 870 per cent year on year, and its Geely EX5 electric SUV climbed into the top ten models outright on 2,008 sales, a rise of roughly 620 per cent.
An electric SUV priced to sell
The EX5 starts from about $41,990 before on-road costs in Complete grade, with a 68.4 kWh battery, up to 475 km of WLTP range and 160 kW. That puts a mid-size electric SUV within reach of a mid-spec petrol one, which is a big part of why it is moving in volume against rivals like the BYD Atto 3 and the MG S5.
Cartell Assessment
A top-ten finish for a brand barely established here is remarkable, and it is not down to discounting alone. The EX5 is roomy, well equipped and sharply priced, and Geely has the dealer network behind it to keep the cars flowing. The badge may be unfamiliar, but the value is not.
AU Outlook
With more Geely models due, including the Starray EM-i hybrid and the smaller EX2, the brand's rapid climb up the sales ladder looks likely to continue.
