Genesis has launched the GV60 Magma, its first real performance EV, priced from $130,000. On boost the Magma makes 478kW and covers 0 to 100 km/h in 3.4 seconds, supercar territory from a brand that built its name on comfortable sedans.

What the Magma changes

The Magma sits above the existing GV60 range as Genesis's dedicated performance model, built around the extra power on boost and a chassis tuned to use it. Four hundred and seventy eight kilowatts and a 3.4 second sprint to 100 km/h put it in company most family sized EVs never get near, and Genesis is leaning into that rather than softening the numbers for a broader audience.

Cartell Assessment

This is not a car for the school run. It will not fit three kids comfortably in the back and the price puts it well clear of the GV60 buyer who wants a quiet, well built electric SUV. What it does show is how serious Genesis now is about building a performance identity to sit alongside the comfort focused cars that made its name, the same move Hyundai made with the N badge and BMW made decades earlier with M.

AU Outlook

Watch for how many Magma orders Genesis can actually fill locally given the price and the niche the car sits in, and whether the halo effect lifts interest in the rest of the GV60 range the way performance flagships usually do for a brand.
