The NEXO is Hyundai's hydrogen fuel cell SUV, and at the time of this review it was more of a preview of where the brand wanted to go than a mainstream buy. The first batch had already arrived in Australia, tied to government fleet programs rather than dealer forecourts.
Simone puts it through its paces and pays attention to the practical questions. Refuelling infrastructure in Australia is sparse. The NEXO is smooth, quiet, and spacious. But if you live more than twenty minutes from a hydrogen station, it is not your car. The fuel cell does its work invisibly, the driving feel is EV-clean, and the SUV proportions are genuinely useful.
For most Australian buyers in 2020, the NEXO was a science project on wheels. For the handful of buyers near a hydrogen pump, or for fleets with the infrastructure to support it, it was a genuine early look at zero-emissions motoring that does not ask you to plug in. Worth watching, even if you cannot buy one yet.
