Hyundai's all-new Santa Fe is a significant step forward from the previous generation. It looks more assured, it's better to drive and the interior has moved into premium territory.
The Elite Diesel runs a 2.2-litre CRDi engine producing 145kW and 421Nm. The torque makes light work of highway driving and towing duties, and the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic shifts cleanly through the range.
Fuel economy is around 7.5 litres per 100 kilometres combined. For a seven-seat SUV, that's a competitive figure.
Inside, the Elite grade is well-appointed. Leather, panoramic sunroof, heated and ventilated front seats, a large touch-screen and a premium sound system are all standard. The third row is more usable than in the outgoing model, though tall adults will still prefer the middle row.
Ride quality is composed and the Santa Fe handles with more confidence than its predecessor. The all-wheel drive system distributes torque efficiently and the SUV feels planted in corners without sacrificing the comfort expected from a family vehicle.
Boot space with all seven seats in use is limited. Fold the third row and you have a genuinely practical load area.
The Santa Fe Elite Diesel competes directly with the Toyota Kluger and Honda CR-V 7. On specification and price, Hyundai has closed the gap considerably.
