Hyundai has confirmed its first extended range electric vehicle, or EREV, for markets outside China, and it will be a version of the Hyundai Santa Fe. The pitch is big: a targeted combined range of up to about 965km, roughly 1.6 times what a petrol Santa Fe manages. The current model is pictured.
How it works
An EREV drives its wheels on electricity, like a full EV, but carries a small petrol engine that works purely as a generator to top up the battery. That engine never drives the wheels directly. Hyundai pairs a dual motor, all wheel drive setup with a battery estimated between 35 and 45kWh, so the car charges and drives like an EV while sidestepping range anxiety on a long haul.

This is a smart hedge for buyers who want electric running around town but still tow, or drive the outback, without hunting for chargers. It is the same logic behind the range extender push from several Chinese brands, and Hyundai bringing it to a mainstream family SUV could make the idea click for Australians.
AU Outlook
The Santa Fe EREV is confirmed for North America first, built from early 2027, with a luxury Genesis EREV to follow. Hyundai has not locked in Australia, but strong local demand for electrified family SUVs makes it an obvious candidate. Watch for a local call once North American production settles.
