The Grand Cherokee SRT8 begins with the premise that an SUV needs 344kW and 624Nm of torque, then works backwards from there. The result is one of the more entertaining vehicles currently on sale.

The 6.4-litre HEMI V8 is the centrepiece. It makes a sound that bypasses rational thought and connects directly to a more primitive part of the brain. The five-speed automatic shifts quickly in Sport mode and the SRT8 accelerates in a way that makes passengers grip things.

Brembo brakes with four-piston front calipers do the work of slowing it down. They're up to the task even under repeated hard use.

The SRT-tuned suspension keeps the Grand Cherokee composed in corners for something of this mass. Body roll exists but it's controlled, and the all-wheel drive system finds traction when the V8 gets enthusiastic.

Inside, the SRT8 gets suede inserts, red contrast stitching and SRT-badged trim. The cabin is well-equipped with Uconnect infotainment, heated and ventilated seats and a premium sound system.

Fuel economy is not the SRT8's strong suit. Expect to see figures in the high teens per 100 kilometres in mixed driving. If that concerns you, this is not your vehicle.

The Grand Cherokee SRT8 serves a very specific customer. One who has assessed their transport needs and concluded that the answer is a 6.4-litre V8.
