Mazda Opens Orders for the CX-6e, Its First Mainstream Electric SUV, From $53,990

Mazda has opened pre-orders for the all-electric CX-6e, its first mainstream electric SUV in Australia, with first customer deliveries expected to begin in September. The range opens at $53,990 before on-road costs for the GT and $56,990 for the flagship Azami.

What you get

Both grades use a single rear-mounted electric motor making 190kW and 290Nm, fed by a 78kWh lithium iron phosphate battery for a claimed WLTP range of up to 484km. Mazda says a DC fast charger can take the battery from 30 to 80 percent in as little as 15 minutes. Standard kit runs to a panoramic glass roof, heated and ventilated front seats, a 23-speaker audio system and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Azami adds digital exterior mirrors and 21-inch alloy wheels.

This matters because Mazda has been cautious on electric cars, and the CX-6e is its first proper tilt at the Tesla Model Y and the wave of Chinese electric SUVs. On paper the pricing is sharp for a brand that trades on interior quality, and Mazda is betting buyers will pay for its polish rather than chase the biggest range number.

AU Outlook

Mazda points to its 6e sedan, whose first 300 cars sold out in two weeks, as the template. If the CX-6e follows, early September build slots will go quickly. The real test comes when independent range and charging figures land against the Model Y and the BYD Sealion 7.
