Fifteen years after the i-MiEV, Mitsubishi is back in the electric car game in Australia, and it has come back swinging. The ASX VR-e is a Pininfarina-styled small electric SUV that arrives in late 2026, and the top GSR grade is the fastest-accelerating Mitsubishi ever officially sold here.

Four grades, one battery

The range runs LS, Aspire and Exceed with a single rear motor, then the dual-motor GSR. Every grade gets a 57.7 kWh LFP battery.

| Grade | Drive | Power | Torque | 0 to 100 km/h | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | LS | RWD | 171 kW | 350 Nm | 6.8 sec | | Aspire | RWD | 171 kW | 350 Nm | 6.8 sec | | Exceed | RWD | 171 kW | 350 Nm | 6.8 sec | | GSR | AWD | 342 kW | 700 Nm | 3.9 sec |

That 3.9 second GSR time puts it in hot hatch and sports car territory. In sport mode the GSR shifts its torque split from 50/50 to 30 front and 70 rear.

Designed by Pininfarina, shaped by the wind

The Italian design house styled the body, and much of it is about aerodynamics. An S-Duct pulls air in through the lower bumper and pushes it out over the bonnet, Air Curtains guide air around the front wheels, and active grille shutters open only when cooling is needed. Flush door handles and smooth aero wheels finish the job. It measures 4,315 mm long, 1,885 mm wide and 1,535 mm tall on a 2,800 mm wheelbase.

Charging and V2L

DC fast charging peaks at 134 kW through a CCS2 port, AC charging tops out at 6.6 kW, and every grade can power appliances through vehicle-to-load. The charge port sits behind a sliding cover rather than a hinged flap, so there is less to snap off. Mitsubishi has not yet published an Australian WLTP range figure.

Tech inside

Every grade has a 15.6-inch touchscreen and a 9.2-inch driver display, with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Climate, hazard and demister controls stay as physical buttons, and a natural-language voice system responds to commands like "I am hot". Aspire and up add heated and cooled front seats, 64-colour ambient lighting, a front boot, a 360-degree camera and automatic parking. Exceed adds 20-inch wheels, a panoramic glass roof, a powered tailgate and 12-speaker SEAS audio. The GSR gets microsuede trim with blue stitching and a two-tone black roof.

Warranty and price

The ASX VR-e comes with Mitsubishi's 10/10/10 Diamond Advantage program: up to 10 years or 200,000 km of warranty if you service at a Mitsubishi dealer, 10 years of capped-price servicing and 10 years of roadside assistance. The battery is covered for 8 years or 160,000 km, with a guarantee it keeps at least 70 per cent of its capacity.

Australian pricing has not been announced. Across the Tasman it runs from NZ$57,990 to NZ$72,990, and local expectations sit somewhere in the $40,000s for the LS. That would put it up against the Kia EV3, BYD Atto 3 and Geely EX5. See all four grades and the full photo gallery on our ASX VR-e page.
