Subaru has teased a new version of the WRX that enthusiasts have been asking for: one with a manual gearbox. The Subaru WRX in the teaser runs the TY85 six-speed manual, the same unit fitted to the last WRX STI before that model was discontinued in 2021. Subaru reportedly restarted the gearbox production line after finding the tooling intact and ready to run.
Not a full STI, and maybe not for us
Subaru has framed the car as a regular production model rather than a special edition, and says it probably will not wear full STI badging. A November 2026 reveal is locked in, but the signs point to a Japan-only car, since Subaru is calling it a reintroduction of the manual WRX, which it does not currently sell at home. The only true STI version of the current WRX remains the S210, which uses a CVT.
Cartell Assessment
A manual WRX is exactly what the faithful have wanted since the auto-only switch, so the teaser will stir plenty of hope. The catch is the fine print: a Japan-first launch and no STI promise mean Australian buyers should keep their expectations in check until Subaru confirms local plans.
AU Outlook
Subaru Australia has not committed to the manual WRX, and the maker has signalled it may not travel beyond Japan. Watch the November reveal for any right-hand drive or export hints. For now, treat an Australian introduction as unlikely rather than a sure thing.
