The Toyota LandCruiser 200 is not for the undecided. It is big, heavy, capable and expensive. It does not apologise for any of those things.

The VX Petrol runs a 4.6-litre V8 producing 228kW and 439Nm. It is not the most efficient way to move five people and their luggage, but it pulls without hesitation and has enough low-end grunt to tow a small planet.

Off the road, the 200 Series is in its element. Multi-terrain select, active traction control and a locking centre differential give it the tools to handle serious terrain. On the road, the air suspension delivers a surprisingly composed ride for something this size.

Inside, the VX grade is properly luxurious. Leather everywhere, triple-zone climate, a premium sound system and more storage than most people can fill. The third row is usable for adults, which is not something you can say about every large SUV.

The price will make you pause. The 200 Series is not cheap and the running costs reflect its dimensions. But if you genuinely need this level of capability in a vehicle that can also carry the school run, there are very few alternatives.
