The 2018 Mazda CX-5 continues its run as Australia's top-selling medium SUV, and the Akera AWD Diesel represents the most complete version of the range. For this review, Amelia brings baby Archie along, giving the CX-5 a real-world family SUV evaluation that goes beyond the usual criteria.
The Akera trim offers a choice between two powertrains: a 2.5-litre SKYACTIV-G petrol and a 2.2-litre SKYACTIV-D diesel. Both have received improvements for 2018, with Mazda claiming more power, better fuel economy and a lower price compared to the outgoing model. Other trims in the range include the Touring, GT and entry-level Neo.
The CX-5 competes against the Toyota RAV4, Hyundai Tucson, Kia Sportage and Nissan X-Trail. Its combination of dynamic driving manners, thoughtful interior design and Mazda's consistent approach to quality has kept it at the top of the sales charts in its segment. The Akera Diesel AWD is the full expression of that formula.
