Mitsubishi has finally given the Triton a proper flagship, and it did it the Australian way. The Triton Raider is tuned by Premcar in Epping, Melbourne, and it lands at $74,990 plus on-road costs. That is the number Mary keeps coming back to in this review, because $75,000 is a lot to ask for a Triton, so the real question is whether the engineering earns it.
What Premcar actually changed
This is a chassis and presence upgrade, not a new engine. Premcar fitted new Monroe dampers front and rear with larger pistons and Raider-specific valving, softer longer-travel front springs, and longer progressive bump stops for the hard hits. The result is a 25 mm front lift, a 15 mm rear lift and 20 mm more track at each end. On top sit 18 by 9.0-inch ROH Assault alloys in brushed bronze, wrapped in 285/60R18 Bridgestone Dueler A/T tyres, which is the wheel and tyre package most buyers would have changed first anyway. A red underbody bash plate, a sports bar, side bars, Raider badging and a numbered console plaque finish the look. Mitsubishi says the tune came out of 40,000 km of development and 7,000 km of outback testing, including a run through the Flinders Ranges.

The numbers that matter
The engine carries over: a 2.4 litre bi-turbo diesel four making 150 kW and 470 Nm through a 6-speed automatic, with Super Select II four-wheel drive and a rear diff lock. It still tows 3,500 kg braked and carries around 950 kg. So the Raider does not add power, and against a V6 Ranger it never will on paper. What it adds is the way it rides and the way it looks, with a chassis set up for our roads rather than someone else's.
How it stacks up
At $74,990 plus on-road costs the Raider slots in $100 under the Ford Ranger Tremor, which brings a 184 kW V6 and 600 Nm. The Toyota HiLux Rugged X is $71,990 plus on-road costs with 150 kW and 500 Nm, and the Isuzu D-Max Blade is $76,990 drive-away. On outputs the Raider is mid-pack. On ride tune and the value of the wheel package, it argues its case.

Cartell Assessment
Mary's take is that this was never meant to be a Ranger Raptor rival. It is a lifted, properly-tyred, locally-tuned Triton that finally looks and rides like a flagship should, at a price that stares the Tremor down. If you were cross-shopping a Triton GSR and planning to spend on suspension and tyres anyway, the Raider does that work for you with a factory warranty over the top.
AU Outlook
The Raider gives Mitsubishi a hero variant it has been missing, and it arrives while Triton 4x4 sales are climbing. Whether it peels buyers off Ford comes down to what the Tremor does on price. Full specs, towing and the rest of the range are on our Mitsubishi Triton page.
