Toyota Australia has confirmed a cheaper way into the plug-in Toyota RAV4 family, a front-drive GXL 2WD PHEV due in the first quarter of 2027. It sits below the existing plug-in grades and is aimed at cheaper Chinese rivals such as the BYD Sealion 6.

The numbers Toyota has locked in The GXL 2WD PHEV teams a 2.5 litre petrol engine with an electric motor for 201 kW combined, and a 22.7 kWh battery delivers about 121 km of electric range on the WLTP cycle. Toyota sales boss John Pappas says the popular mid-grade GXL gains broad appeal with the plug-in option. The one number Toyota has not given is the price. Widely reported estimates put it near $54,000 before on-road costs, roughly $4,800 under today's cheapest RAV4 PHEV, but that figure is a projection rather than a confirmed price.

Cartell Assessment A sharper plug-in RAV4 is the move buyers have wanted, bringing the badge within reach of the BYD and Geely PHEVs stealing its lunch. Just do not bank on the $54,000 talk until Toyota puts it in writing.

AU Outlook Expect firm pricing closer to the early 2027 launch. If Toyota lands near the estimate, the Chinese challengers finally have a genuine fight on their hands.
