The EP2-Pro is Cartell's first ever e-bike review, back in 2023, when Simone took a look at what was then a curious new category in Australia. The verdict still stands: this is not really a bicycle. It is a moped with pedals attached, and it is honest about that.

The 750-watt Bafang motor is more than the European standard. The 20-inch fat tyres absorb potholes and gravel that would shake a normal commuter off course. The 48V 13Ah battery gives a real-world 60 kilometres of range. And the foldable alloy frame means you can throw it in the boot of a hatchback or roll it into a flat without much drama.

The thing nobody tells you upfront: the motor can hit 45 km/h with the throttle on full, which means it sits outside Australian e-bike road rules in unrestricted mode. You can ride it speed-limited (capped at 25 km/h to stay legal) and it is still a properly capable bike. But if you ever switch it to full power, you are riding something the police would classify as an unregistered motorcycle. Worth knowing.

The plus side of the fat tyres and chunky frame is real comfort. The front suspension absorbs the rough stuff. Three modes (pedal-only, pedal-assist, throttle) cover whatever mood you are in. Charge time of 6.5 hours from flat is reasonable.

This is the e-bike to buy if you want fun more than utility, if you have somewhere to charge it, and if you accept that it is closer to a Vespa than a Malvern Star. For pure city commuters, the smaller T14 makes more sense. For weekend adventures where you want a smile, the EP2-Pro is hard to beat at the price.
