The September 2026 VFACTS results are in, and the Ford Ranger is back on top. Australians registered 108,778 new vehicles for the month, up 1.8 per cent on a year ago, and the Ranger led the lot on 5,062 sales, up about 4 per cent. The story underneath the ute, though, is the one that will be talked about.
Electric cars took almost a quarter of the market
Pure electric vehicles accounted for 26,287 registrations in September, a 24.2 per cent share and a rise of 117.7 per cent year on year. Add hybrids (17,843) and plug-in hybrids (10,072) and electrified vehicles made up close to half of everything sold, the second month running that they outsold petrol-only cars. Last September, pure electric share was just 11.3 per cent.
Cartell Assessment
The Ranger remains the default pick for tradies and families who tow, and a 4 per cent lift in a flat market shows demand has not cooled. What has changed is the company it keeps. BYD finished second among all brands on 8,191, ahead of Ford on 7,592 for the month, while Toyota stayed top on 17,682.
AU Outlook
Expect the top of the charts to stay a close contest. The RAV4 and the Tesla Model Y both sat within a few hundred units of the Ranger, and the electric share looks set to keep climbing into summer as more sub $45,000 models land.
