Jeep has issued a recall for 1,394 examples of the Grand Cherokee in Australia over a software fault that can delay how the side airbags deploy in a crash. Every affected car is a 2023 build of the current fifth generation WL model, and the notice is listed on the federal recalls register as REC-006741.
What the fault is
The problem sits in the occupant restraint controller, the module that decides when the airbags fire. A software error can leave the front door airbag pressure sensors active when they should not be, and that can slow the side airbags in a side impact. The recall notice warns that airbags not deploying as intended raise the risk of injury. The drivetrain and the rest of the car are not affected.
Cartell Assessment
It is a small recall by numbers, but airbag timing is not something to leave for the next service. The reassuring part is the remedy: there is no part to replace and no long wait, just a software update that an authorised dealer loads in a single visit at no cost.
AU Outlook
Jeep will contact owners, but you can move first. Check your VIN against the REC-006741 notice or call Stellantis Australia on 1300 133 079, then book the free update at a Jeep dealer. If you own a 2023 Grand Cherokee, do it before your next trip rather than waiting on the letter.
