Mitsubishi has confirmed its first electric car in nearly 15 years. The Mitsubishi ASX VR-e arrives in November, a small electric SUV built on Foxconn-backed Foxtron technology and sized close to an MG4 hatch.
What Mitsubishi has confirmed
The range opens with the LS, which pairs a single rear motor making 171kW and 350Nm with rear-wheel drive and a claimed 0 to 100km/h of 6.8 seconds. The flagship GSR steps up to all-wheel drive, 342kW and 700Nm, and a claimed 3.9 seconds. Every grade uses a 57.7kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, supports 134kW DC fast charging and adds vehicle-to-load. Mitsubishi quotes more than 400km of range on the LS, though it is yet to publish final Australian figures. Four grades are planned: LS, Aspire, Exceed and GSR.
Cartell Assessment
The catch is price, and Mitsubishi has not locked it in. A BYD Atto 3 still starts under $40,000 before on-road costs, and the Kia EV3 and Hyundai Kona Electric are already established, so the ASX VR-e has a badge and a story to justify its number when it finally appears.
AU Outlook
Expect Australian pricing and local range figures closer to the November arrival. If the LS lands near its rivals, Mitsubishi walks straight back into a fight it left nearly 15 years ago.
