The Mitsubishi Pajero is back. One of Australia's best known four-wheel-drive badges returns as a body-on-frame seven-seat large SUV, a sister model to the Triton, with order books opening this month ahead of first deliveries in December. Prices start at $68,490 before on-road costs and run to $84,990 for the flagship.

What you get

The range opens with the GLS at $68,490 in five-seat form and $69,990 as a seven-seater, then the Exceed at $79,990 and the GSR at $84,990, all before on-road costs. Every grade uses a 2.4-litre turbo-diesel four-cylinder making 150 kW and 480 Nm through an 8-speed automatic and Super Select II four-wheel drive, with a 3,500 kg braked tow rating and an 80-litre tank. Mitsubishi has confirmed a hybrid Pajero by 2030.

Cartell Assessment

On paper the GLS undercuts a Toyota LandCruiser Prado, which starts at $73,200 before on-road costs, so you get the badge back without LandCruiser money. It also lines up against the Ford Everest from $58,990 and the GWM Tank 500 from $65,990 drive-away, so the large four-wheel-drive class just got a lot more crowded.

AU Outlook

Order books open this month, though the exact opening date has not been published, so check Mitsubishi Australia before you commit. First deliveries are due in December.
