Tesla has opened Australian orders for the Model Y L, a stretched, six seat version of the country's favourite electric car. The configurator lists it at $74,900 before on-road costs, which places it $6,000 above the Long Range All-Wheel Drive and well below the $89,400 Performance.
Three rows, two seats each
The L takes the familiar Tesla Model Y shape and adds length where families need it: three rows in a 2+2+2 layout, with a pair of captain's chairs in the middle row instead of a bench. Tesla pitches the cabin at buyers who liked everything about the Model Y except the seat count, and the L runs all-wheel drive as standard.
Cartell Assessment
This is the most requested Model Y variant finally showing up. Plenty of Australian families cross-shopped the Model Y against seven seat SUVs and walked away purely on space. At $74,900 the L is not cheap, but it lands under the lux three row EV crowd by a wide margin.
AU Outlook
The six seat layout puts the L up against the Kia EV9 and the plusher end of the family SUV market. If Tesla can deliver quickly while rivals quote waiting lists, expect to see a lot of these on the school run.
