What is it?

The JAC T9 PHEV (Hunter PHEV in some markets) is one of the first plug-in hybrid utes on sale in Australia and the second JAC nameplate after the diesel T9 ute launched in 2024. It pairs a 1.5L turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor and a 21.4 kWh LFP battery for a claimed 100 km of NEDC EV range. Combined system output is 285 kW and 760 Nm. Drive is full-time 4WD with a low-range transfer case. Single grade at launch, T9 Haven PHEV at $55,990 drive-away, undercutting the BYD Shark 6 and the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV. Towing capacity is 3,500 kg braked.

Single grade on offer in Australia. Warranty cover sits at 7 years, unlimited km.

Interior and Technology

Cheapest plug-in hybrid ute on sale in Australia at $55,990 drive-away, $2,000 under the BYD Shark 6 and almost $8,000 under the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV. 3,500 kg braked towing matches HiLux and Ranger. 3.3 kW V2L through the tub runs power tools and camping kit. 7-year unlimited km warranty leads diesel rivals.

EV range claim is NEDC, not WLTP, so real-world range is closer to 70 km. JAC dealer footprint thin outside metro and regional centres. PHEV ute resale story untested in the Australian market. Untested by ANCAP independently of the diesel T9 (which is 5-star from 2024).

Should you buy the T9?

Reasons to buy

  • Cheapest plug-in hybrid ute on sale in Australia at $55,990 drive-away, $2,000 under the BYD Shark 6 and almost $8,000 under the GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV. 3,500 kg braked towing matches HiLux and Ranger. 3.3 kW V2L through the tub runs power tools and camping kit. 7-year unlimited km warranty leads diesel rivals.
  • Warranty: 7 years, unlimited km. Battery: 8 years, 160,000 km.
  • Braked towing rated at 3,500 kg.

Reasons to wait

  • EV range claim is NEDC, not WLTP, so real-world range is closer to 70 km. JAC dealer footprint thin outside metro and regional centres. PHEV ute resale story untested in the Australian market. Untested by ANCAP independently of the diesel T9 (which is 5-star from 2024).
  • You need the broadest dealer network (Toyota HiLux, Ford Ranger). You want a proven Australian PHEV ute resale story (the segment is brand-new). You want WLTP-rated EV range numbers rather than the older NEDC claim.
  • Confirm your nearest JAC dealer for servicing access. The diesel T9 carries a 5-star ANCAP rating from 2024, which is a useful reference but does not transfer to the PHEV automatically. Cross-shop the BYD Shark 6, GWM Cannon Alpha PHEV and Ford Ranger PHEV.
  • Top trim climbs to $55,990 drive-away.
