The 2017 Hyundai i30 has taken on a whole new look for this generation, and the SR Turbo is the performance-focused variant that justifies the redesign most completely. With a 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine producing 150 kW and 265 Nm of torque, it is one of the most capable small hatches available at its price point.
The manual gearbox featured in this review is a six-speed unit, and the combination of turbocharged power and an involving manual transmission gives the i30 SR a character that the standard Active diesel does not attempt to replicate. A seven-speed dual-clutch automatic is available for buyers who prefer it.
The i30 SR Turbo sits in a competitive class alongside performance variants of the Volkswagen Golf, Mazda 3 and Toyota Corolla. Hyundai's commitment to design and performance in the 2017 i30 demonstrates that the brand has moved beyond its budget-car origins.
