The 2017 Kia Rio has received enough changes to look and feel substantially different from the model it replaces, even if Kia is clear that this is an updated rather than all-new car. The top-spec SLi trim adds equipment that makes the Rio a credible choice in the small hatchback segment.

The 1.4-litre petrol engine produces 77 kW and 133 Nm of torque, paired with a four-speed automatic. That gearbox is worth noting, as the limited spread of ratios means the Rio is most at home in city traffic. On open roads at highway speeds, the engine works harder than some rivals would.

In the small car segment, the Rio goes up against the Hyundai i30, Toyota Corolla and Mazda 3. At its price point, the SLi trim makes a case on the strength of its standard equipment, and Kia's seven-year warranty continues to be a genuine point of difference in the segment.
