The MX-5 has always been about keeping it simple. Two seats, rear-wheel drive, and enough power to feel fast without scaring you. The RF adds a retractable hardtop that changes the look entirely, turning roadster into something closer to a fastback coupe and shifting the MX-5 into slightly different territory.
Amelia has tested the soft-top MX-5 before, so this is a comparison as much as a standalone review. The RF is heavier by a small margin, but on Australian roads it is not something you notice. Wind noise is better sealed, over-the-shoulder visibility tightens when the roof is up, and watching the panels fold is a party trick that does not get stale.
The standard MX-5 is your weekend car. The RF is the one you actually drive to dinner. It looks more grown-up, it is better insulated, and costs a little more for the privilege. Those who just want open-air fun and do not care about kerb presence should stick with the soft top.
