Toyota's all-new Corolla was a genuine step forward from the generation it replaced. Built on the TNGA platform shared with the Camry and the C-HR, it brings improved dynamics, a better-looking interior, and two distinct powertrain choices to a segment where Toyota had started to feel slightly uninspired. Both the Corolla ZR Hybrid and the Corolla SX petrol were tested for this review.
The hybrid adds electric assist that makes it noticeably more efficient in urban driving, which in Sydney and Melbourne traffic is most of the driving. The SX petrol is the more driver-focused option, with a direct-injection engine and a CVT that is better than most. The interior on both is genuinely improved over the outgoing model, with a higher-placed instrument cluster and more tactile materials throughout.
The 2019 Corolla earns its place on any shortlist for the small car buyer who wants reliability, improved fuel efficiency, and a cabin that does not feel dated in year three. The hybrid makes more sense in urban cycles. The petrol SX suits the buyer who does more regional driving. Both are better than what they replaced.
