Toyota has locked in pricing for the new-generation HiLux, and the tradie favourite has gone up in a hurry. The base WorkMate now opens at $33,990 before on-road costs, up from $27,730, an increase of just over $6,000 on the cheapest way into the range. Some grades climb by close to $10,000. The 2026 HiLux reaches showrooms in December.
What you get for the extra money
The jump is not a new engine. The carryover 2.8-litre turbo-diesel still makes 150kW and 500Nm, and it is now standard across the range after the old 2.7-litre petrol and 2.4-litre diesel were dropped. What you are paying for is the new-generation body, more safety gear and updated technology. At $33,990 the WorkMate still slips under the base Ford Ranger, so the two utes stay locked together at the entry point.
Cartell Assessment
A $6,000 rise on the cheapest HiLux is a big ask on a vehicle half the country buys on price alone. Toyota is betting the badge, the resale and the dealer network carry it, and history says that bet usually pays. Fleet buyers will feel the sting first.
AU Outlook
With the HiLux dearer and plug-in rivals like the BYD Shark 6 circling, the ute fight only gets tighter from here. If you want the old pricing, run-out stock is your last chance before the new range lands in December.
