BYD says it will begin small scale production of solid state batteries in 2027, promising more than 1000km of range from a pack that is lighter and faster charging than today's lithium iron phosphate units.

Why it matters here

BYD is already a top ten brand in Australia, and the Shark 6 ute and Sealion 7 SUV are everywhere on local roads. Any battery breakthrough BYD gets to production flows into cars Australians are actually buying, not concept cars at a motor show.

The catch

Small scale production is not the same as cars in showrooms. Rival battery giant CATL has publicly said mass adoption of solid state technology is still years away, and the industry has a long history of solid state timelines slipping.

Treat 2027 as a lab date, not a showroom date. The pattern with battery announcements is consistent: the chemistry works, then the hard part is manufacturing it at scale and at a price a car buyer will pay. BYD has earned some credibility here because it makes its own batteries and its Blade pack went from announcement to mass production quickly, but 1000km claims deserve scepticism until a production car does it on a real test.

AU Outlook

Nothing changes for Australian BYD buyers this year or next. If solid state lands on schedule, the first cars to get it will almost certainly be flagship models in China first, with Australia following later. Buy the car that suits you now rather than waiting for a battery that is years away.
