Ford has pulled the sheet off the Bronco Basecamp for Australia, and it is not the ladder-frame rock-hopper you might be picturing. This is the first electrified Bronco, it rides on a monocoque platform, and it is built for people who want to drive somewhere quiet and actually stay the night. Local arrivals are locked in for the second half of 2027.
A campsite built into the car
Instead of bolting a roof tent and a fridge to the roof rack, Ford has baked the gear in. On the Outer Banks model there is an electric Pop-Up Lift Roof for standing room and airflow, the cabin folds down into a proper sleeping space, and there is a 7.5L console that heats or cools your snacks. Out the back, the Wild Kitchen drops out of the swing gate with a fold-down bench so you can cook without unpacking the boot.
The super-hybrid bit, explained
The powertrain is Ford's new range extender. You drive on dual electric motors fed by a 49 kWh battery, and a 1.5L turbo petrol engine sits in the background as a generator, quietly topping the battery up. It never drives the wheels. Ford reckons the combined range will land between 800 and 900km, so you get EV smoothness without range anxiety on a big trip. Park up and it becomes an off-grid power station with up to 6.6 kW of Pro Power Onboard, enough for an induction cooktop, a coffee machine and your camp lights at once.

This is a clever read of how Aussies actually use the outdoors. If Ford gets the price right, a go-anywhere-and-stay SUV that runs your campsite off its own battery is going to have a queue. The catch is the wait, and we have no local pricing yet.
