Ford has named its long awaited budget electric ute the Fathom. In the United States it will start at US$29,945 including delivery charges, which converts to roughly A$42,600, with production due to begin in 2027.
A new name, a new platform
The Fathom is the first vehicle on Ford's new Universal EV platform, an architecture built for a family of affordable electric vehicles and engineered to support right hand drive. Ford promises more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4, a front trunk plus a conventional bed, bidirectional charging that can power your home or tools, and over the air updates. Final design, battery sizes and range figures have not been revealed yet.
The Australian signal
Ford has reserved the Fathom name in Australia. That is not confirmation of a local launch, but companies do not lodge trademarks for fun, and the platform's right hand drive engineering removes the usual excuse.
Cartell Assessment
An electric dual cab in the low 40s would land in genuinely disruptive territory. The cheapest electric ute conversation in Australia currently starts well above that, and BYD's Shark 6 plug-in hybrid has shown how much appetite there is for affordable electrified utes. The unknowns are real: no confirmed Australian launch, no local pricing, and US prices never convert cleanly once shipping, compliance and margin are added. But the intent is obvious.
AU Outlook
Nothing to buy yet and nothing confirmed for our showrooms. Watch for a decision after US production starts in 2027. If Ford brings the Fathom here at anything near that converted price, the ute market gets very interesting.
