The Hyundai i40 is the Korean brand's attempt at a proper European-style midsize sedan. The diesel variant takes that ambition seriously.

The 1.7-litre CRDi turbo diesel makes 100kW and 320Nm. The torque figure does most of the heavy lifting in everyday driving and the engine is refined enough to pass unnoticed on longer trips. Combined fuel economy is around 5.5 litres per 100 kilometres, which is genuinely competitive.

The Elite grade arrives well-equipped. There's leather, a panoramic sunroof, an eight-inch touch-screen, rear-view camera and parking sensors. Hyundai has pushed the standard specification well above what rivals offer at similar prices.

The cabin quality has improved considerably. Surfaces feel substantial and the layout is logical without being uninspiring. Rear seat space is adequate for two adults, though three abreast would be a negotiation.

Ride quality is one of the i40's strengths. The suspension absorbs surface imperfections without transmitting harshness to the cabin. Highway refinement is particularly good.

Handling is competent rather than engaging. The steering is direct enough for confident manoeuvring but doesn't invite exploration.

The i40 Elite Diesel represents solid value in a segment that has become quite competitive. Hyundai's credibility in this space continues to grow.
